Blockchain in Communication Networks: A Comprehensive Review
M. A. Mamun
Abstract
This paper investigates the integration of blockchain technology within modern communication networks, focusing on the improvement of security, authentication, and resource allocation. As communication networks evolve toward 5G and beyond, the research examines how distributed ledgers can mitigate risks related to unauthorized access and network congestion. The author provides an extensive analysis of blockchain applications in edge computing and software-defined networking (SDN), demonstrating how smart contracts can automate network maintenance and service level agreements (SLAs). The study methodology includes a critical assessment of architectural requirements for integrating blockchain into network devices with constrained resources, such as those found in massive machine-type communications (mMTC). The findings underscore the importance of low-latency consensus protocols in real-time communication environments, providing a strategic outlook on the future convergence of distributed ledger technology and high-speed network infrastructure.
Key Findings
- 1Blockchain enhances security in 5G and edge computing by providing decentralized authentication mechanisms.
- 2Smart contracts automate resource management and SLA enforcement in dynamic network environments.
- 3Integration of blockchain requires lightweight consensus mechanisms to function on resource-constrained IoT devices.
- 4Distributed ledgers provide a resilient alternative to centralized network management systems.
