Distributed Ledger Technology for Securing IoT
SS Panda
Abstract
This research focuses on the intersection of DLT and IoT to provide a more secure framework for device interaction. The author details the architectural requirements for a DLT-based IoT system, emphasizing the importance of light nodes and efficient verification processes. The paper analyzes various DLT implementations, comparing private and public ledgers in terms of their effectiveness for securing device data and command streams. The results suggest that hybrid DLT architectures offer the best compromise between performance and security. This study serves as a technical exploration of how blockchain primitives—such as hashing, digital signatures, and consensus—can be applied to secure vulnerable IoT endpoints. The significance of this work lies in its technical grounding and its realistic approach to the feasibility of DLT in resource-limited device environments.
Key Findings
- 1Hybrid DLT architectures provide the necessary balance of performance and security for IoT environments.
- 2Lightweight verification protocols are necessary for resource-constrained IoT devices to participate in the network.
- 3Cryptographic primitives like digital signatures are sufficient for initial device authentication.
- 4Public ledgers are often unnecessary for IoT security, favoring private or consortium-based approaches.
