EIP-2938: Account Abstraction
Ansgar Dietrichs, Vitalik Buterin, Matt Garnett, Will Villanueva
Abstract
EIP-2938 serves as a formal proposal to implement account abstraction at the protocol layer of the Ethereum network, replacing the existing, hard-coded authentication model. The EIP introduces two new transaction types and a new 'top-level' execution context that allows smart contracts to perform the validation work traditionally reserved for EOAs. This proposal focuses on enabling contract accounts to initiate transactions, effectively allowing them to pay their own gas fees and handle their own nonces. The technical architecture relies on new opcodes that allow the EVM to distinguish between 'validation' and 'execution' phases of a transaction. By doing so, the network can safely execute complex smart contract logic before a transaction is actually included in a block, preventing spam and ensuring that the network can account for the gas costs accurately. This shift is fundamental for the adoption of account abstraction, as it provides a robust, protocol-native solution that avoids the complexities of existing 'meta-transaction' schemes, which often require external relayers and introduce centralization risks.
Key Findings
- 1Proposes protocol-level account abstraction via new transaction types.
- 2Enables smart contracts to handle transaction validation and gas payment.
- 3Introduces a new execution model separating validation from execution.
- 4Reduces reliance on centralized relayer infrastructure for meta-transactions.
