ERC-5267: Retrieval of EIP-712 Domain
Francisco Giordano, Hadrien Croubois
Abstract
ERC-5267 defines a standard way for smart contracts to expose their EIP-712 domain information. While EIP-712 provided the framework for typed structured data, it did not specify how a contract should communicate its domain requirements (such as the contract address, chain ID, or verifying contract address) to front-end applications. ERC-5267 adds a `eip712Domain()` function that enables wallets and Dapps to dynamically query a contract for its expected domain separator components. This significantly improves the user experience by reducing the need for hardcoded configurations in client-side applications. When a contract is deployed on multiple chains or behind a proxy, it can accurately report its specific domain context, ensuring that signatures are generated correctly and rejected only when invalid. By making domain information discoverable on-chain, this standard enhances the robustness of EIP-712 implementations, minimizing signature-related errors and streamlining the integration of complex off-chain signing protocols within the broader Ethereum ecosystem.
Key Findings
- 1Enables programmatic discovery of EIP-712 domain information from smart contracts.
- 2Reduces errors in cross-chain signature generation by providing dynamic context.
- 3Simplifies Dapp development by eliminating hardcoded domain configurations.
- 4Supports the broader adoption of typed data signing protocols.
