ERC-7579: Minimal Modular Smart Accounts
Konrad Kopp, Taekyung Kim, Hazem Ahmed, Phil Li
Abstract
ERC-7579 provides a standardized interface for modular smart accounts, establishing a framework that ensures interoperability across different implementations of account abstraction. As the ecosystem moves toward more programmable accounts, the risk of fragmentation increases. ERC-7579 addresses this by defining minimal requirements for modular smart accounts, specifically focusing on how modules interact with account storage and execution logic. The standard specifies how accounts should handle installation and uninstallation of modules, ensuring that security-sensitive operations are managed predictably. By setting these standards, developers can create plugins that are compatible with various smart account implementations, fostering an ecosystem where users can easily upgrade or customize their wallets with features like social recovery, daily spending limits, or permissioned access. This modular approach moves away from monolithic smart contract wallets, allowing for more flexible, scalable, and secure wallet development that adapts to changing user needs without requiring a complete overhaul of the core account architecture.
Key Findings
- 1Establishes a common interface for modular smart account interoperability.
- 2Defines clear standards for module installation and execution within smart accounts.
- 3Reduces technical fragmentation by enabling cross-compatible plugin development.
- 4Encourages a flexible, component-based architecture for user-controlled wallets.
