Monad: The Scalable L1 Smart Contract Platform
Keone Hon, James Hunsaker, Eunice Giarta
Abstract
The Monad whitepaper presents a strategy for achieving massive scaling on the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) without sacrificing compatibility. The authors identify that current EVM implementations are bottlenecked by single-threaded execution and inefficient state access. Monad addresses these issues through two primary innovations: MonadBFT, a high-performance consensus protocol, and a massively parallelized execution engine. By leveraging deferred execution and state-pipelining, the platform separates the consensus mechanism from the execution cycle, allowing for higher transaction volume while keeping the network decentralized. The whitepaper argues that full bytecode-level compatibility with Ethereum is critical for ecosystem adoption and developer retention. This document serves as an architectural guide for builders attempting to bridge the gap between high-performance execution environments and the vast, existing Ethereum developer and application ecosystem, focusing on architectural optimizations that preserve user-level parity.
Key Findings
- 1Achieves high-throughput execution while remaining EVM compatible.
- 2Implements parallel execution of EVM bytecode.
- 3Utilizes an optimized consensus mechanism, MonadBFT.
- 4Uses pipelining to increase state access efficiency.
