Plasma: Scalable Autonomous Smart Contracts
Joseph Poon, Vitalik Buterin
Abstract
The Plasma whitepaper outlines a framework for creating hierarchical sidechains on top of a root blockchain, typically Ethereum. The core contribution is the utilization of Merkle trees to represent state transitions, allowing for the construction of deeply nested sidechains that inherit the security properties of the root chain. By offloading transactions to these 'Plasma chains,' the system aims to support high-throughput, autonomous smart contracts. A fundamental mechanism described is the exit game, which defines how users can securely withdraw funds from a potentially malicious or failing sidechain back to the root chain, provided they can prove their state through Merkle proofs. The paper is significant as it represents one of the earliest structured attempts to solve Ethereum's scalability bottleneck without sacrificing the core security guarantees of the underlying base layer, setting the groundwork for subsequent Layer 2 development strategies.
Key Findings
- 1Introduced the concept of hierarchical child blockchains anchored to a root chain.
- 2Utilized Merkle proofs to ensure the integrity of off-chain transactions.
- 3Defined an exit protocol to protect users from malicious or unresponsive sidechain operators.
- 4Demonstrated potential for massive throughput increases compared to base-layer processing.
