Sui: A Next-Generation Smart Contract Platform
George Danezis, Lefteris Kokoris-Kogias, Alberto Sonnino, Alexander Spiegelman
Abstract
The Sui whitepaper outlines a blockchain platform designed to solve the bottlenecks of traditional account-based models by leveraging object-centric state management. Unlike conventional blockchains that process transactions sequentially, Sui allows for independent transaction parallelization, distinguishing between transactions that touch unique, non-shared objects and those that require global ordering. The platform utilizes the Move language, ensuring memory-safe smart contract execution. By treating assets as distinct objects, Sui effectively reduces latency and allows for massive horizontal scaling. The paper describes a system architecture that handles simple transactions using a light-weight consensus protocol, while more complex transactions are routed through a robust BFT protocol. This design enables high performance for gaming and digital asset management, where frequent state changes are common. The methodology provides a robust answer to the challenge of blockchain throughput in high-frequency application environments.
Key Findings
- 1Implements an object-centric model for improved state management.
- 2Enables parallel execution for independent transactions.
- 3Utilizes the Move language for secure, flexible asset representation.
- 4Optimizes consensus pathing based on transaction complexity.
